About Silicone Prosthetic Toes & Feet

We work closely with patients and their families to determine a prosthetic solution that will be comfortable, life-like, and functional. We custom-make your silicone toe prosthesis to protect sensitive tissue, improve function and create a normal appearance. We mimic the texture, color and translucency of your skin and nails to create prosthetic toes that closely match your existing toes.

Prosthetic toes may be needed due to:

  • Congenital or birth difference; such as brachymetatarsia (abnormally short toe), Amniotic band syndrome, or symbrachydactyly (missing toes at birth)

  • Surgery – toe amputation due to cancer or tumor removal

  • Disease such as diabetes or scleroderma resulting in toe amputation

  • Traumatic injury – work-related injuries, burns, or other traumas

How is a prosthetic toe attached?

Our silicone prosthetic toes rely on suction to stay in place securely by overlapping remaining anatomy. If your toe loss is complete, as seen above in the case of a great toe amputation, we may need to band an adjacent toe or overlap part of the foot to create a secure big toe prosthesis.

Your silicone toe prosthesis is not intended to be worn barefoot; the prosthesis needs a shoe or sandal to provide additional support and protect the foot and prosthesis from damage.

How does a toe prosthesis improve function?

Loss of even a single toe, especially a great toe amputation, impacts gait and balance and may lead to foot, knee, and hip pain. Custom toe prosthetics may help maintain the normal position of remaining toes and improve your gait and comfort by restoring normal toe length.

Can nail polish be used on the prosthesis?

Yes, you can paint the toenails on most prostheses. We suggest that you avoid gel polishes and use non-acetone nail polish remover.

Connect with experts who care!

If you are considering a silicone toe prosthesis, we welcome you to meet with us for a new patient consultation and evaluation at no cost to you.

You will meet with one of our clinical anaplastologists who will listen to your concerns, examine your affected anatomy, and show you examples of toe prosthetics. Our anaplastologist will describe your options for prosthetic attachment and will develop a treatment plan for you. Be assured our clinical staff have earned masters degrees from accredited institutions and are certified in their specialty.

If you are unable to meet with us in person in Milwaukee or Madison, Wisconsin or one of our satellite locations, we can schedule a brief evaluation via Facetime or Skype. If you are not comfortable with a video meeting, you can provide us with photos and schedule a phone meeting.

Please contact us to schedule your complimentary initial consultation and evaluation. There is no obligation or pressure to proceed with treatment.

What You Can Expect

First and foremost, no need to worry–we are gentle and nothing we do is painful. We custom-make each toe prosthesis in our own laboratory ensuring high quality and individual design. The process requires 4 to 5 appointments which involve these steps:

  • We make molds of the feet using gentle materials.

  • We modify the patient model and fabricate a diagnostic test socket to evaluate fit.

  • The shape of the toe prosthesis is carefully sculpted in wax as we establish a natural contour.

  • When the sculpture is complete, we fabricate a durable mold which allows for reproduction of the silicone prosthesis.

  • We have you try on a prototype version of the prosthesis and make modifications until a secure fit is achieved.

  • We back-paint the custom toenail.

  • We meticulously paint every skin detail using your color formulae in your mold.

  • We check the toe prosthesis for precise fit, and delicately paint color details, such as freckling or even a tattoo, onto the surface.

  • We demonstrate wear and care instructions so that you can wear your prosthetic toe with confidence.
